Skin needling- everything you need to know
Here’s my experience, before and after of skin needling.
Dealing with pigmentation, fine lines, congestion, the occasional pimple and dull skin tone? Me too! One of the ways I practice self-care is with a professional wellness treatment. My latest was skin needling.
It’s a match made in heaven when you find a professional you can trust. I’ve been seeing Jane Wales for years - she’s the Yoda of skin. So when she recommended skin needling followed by my beloved Omnilux treatment I was down to try.
I immediately conjured images of Kim Kardashian and her bleeding face and thought hmm not sure if I’m up for that. After some reassurance that Kim’s vampire facial was a different thing, I decided to give it a go.
What is skin needling
Skin needling is also known as micro-needling or collagen induction therapy. The treatment I had, used a device called Dermapen. It looks like a pen with super-thin disposable needles sticking out the end.
The depth of penetration gets adjusted based on your skin type, concerns, and age. The needles vibrate and penetrate the skin at such high speed they make teeny tiny punctures. This sends a message to your brain saying 'hey there’s some little wounds here, round up the collagen and send it on down’. The collagen then heals, improves texture, fine lines, pigmentation, and appearance.
What did the treatment involve?
It started with a facial cleanse followed by a numbing cream that stays on for 25 minutes. While it worked its magic, we talked through the treatment and aftercare. I had a brow shape and tint followed by a relaxing head massage. After a hyaluronic serum application, we were ready to commence the Dermapen treatment.
How did it feel?
Like a ticklish vibration on my face. It was a tiny bit prickly on areas with less fat, like my hairline and jaw but thanks to the numbing cream, I didn’t feel much. Heads up- the nose area tickles like hell, felt as though someone was sticking two feathers up there! This was the most uncomfortable part of the treatment - not painful but so darn ticklish.
The total skin needling time is just 25 mins.
What happened next?
After the needling finished I put on goggles for the Omnilux light therapy. It’s super bright and slightly warm- reminds me of lying on a beach minus the sun damage.
There are three different colours of light- blue to reduce bacteria and inflammation, red to stimulate hydration and yellow to rebuild and strengthen tissue. It's the perfect follow up to microneedling. While it was on, I got a heavenly foot and leg massage then a neck, shoulder, arm and hand massage. Pure bliss.
What were the results?
After treatment
I won’t lie- have you seen the episode of SATC where Samantha has a chemical peel? I looked like that until I went to bed. There was no pain, even when the numbing cream wore off.
Day 2
I woke up and was nervous and eager to look in the mirror- most of the redness had disappeared overnight. I was surprised to see improved skin tone, smaller pores, and slightly pink cheeks.
Day 3
No redness in sight. My husband commented that my ‘patches’ (the pesky pigmentation that I’ve been unable to shake since pregnancy looked lighter. LOOKED LIGHTER! After one treatment!
Day 4
I had slight dryness which disappeared after a gentle exfoliation. My skin felt smooth and looked bright. My patches have definitely improved, as has my tone, texture, and pore visibility. I put some foundation on and WOW it glided smooth as silk - I was glowing.
Would I do it again?
Without a doubt. I’ll go ahead with the recommendation of three treatments (six weeks apart) to start. For only a little downtime, the results were so worth it. It’s an investment- seeing immediate improvement after one treatment and having lit from within glow is a huge incentive. I can't wait to see the results after three. Let me know if you’re keen to see them too.
Does this make you want to try skin needling?
